My Invisible Friend
If you should catch me talking to nobody there,
or
smiling sweetly at the empty air,
don’t
be alarmed; it’s just my invisible friend.
If I’m preoccupied please don’t think I’m rude,
or
if I take a double helping of food,
it’s
just a little caretaking for my invisible friend.
We’ve been together since I learned to sleep;
we’ve
been through dreams and denials,
we’ve
drudged and dozed.
We made a pact that I mean to keep:
we
said “Let’s don’t let go” and I won’t let go!
He doesn’t listen to his other friends who say I’m not real.
He says it’s all a matter of how you feel
and
he sticks up for me, my invisible friend.
He’s seen me pissed off and he’s seen me cry;
And he sticks up for me when I don’t know how.
I wanted to leave him; I wanted to die;
He said: “Do what you got to, but I would miss you, buddy.”
Now we’re gonna have a big party,
invite all of you --
No one will know what’s going on except us two
But we’re quite used to that, me and my invisible
friend.
